Abu Dhabi Covid-19 Field Hospital Built in Just 9 Days, Designed to Serve for 10 Years


In a remarkable display of speed, planning, and compassion, Abu Dhabi established a world-class Covid-19 field hospital in a record-breaking nine days, with the capacity to operate efficiently for up to a decade. The 46,500-square-foot Al Razeen Field Hospital, located in Al Wathba, around 60 km from Abu Dhabi city, stands as a strong example of the UAE’s commitment to public health and emergency preparedness.

A Rapid Response to an Unprecedented Crisis

The 205-bed Covid-19 field hospital was set up under the guidance of the Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis, and Disasters Committee as part of an initiative led by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Before welcoming patients, Khaleej Times was given exclusive access to the facility, highlighting the meticulous planning that went into building a fully functional hospital in such a short time. A dedicated team of 317 experts, including engineers and supervisors, worked around the clock to complete the project without compromising on quality or safety.

Built for Care, Prepared for the Unexpected

According to Dr Partha Banerjee UAE, CEO of Al Mazroui Medical Centre and head of patient management at the hospital, Covid-19 can escalate rapidly, even in asymptomatic patients. He emphasized that the virus demands immediate medical readiness, which the UAE has proactively addressed through significant investment in healthcare infrastructure.

“This is not a temporary setup. It is a proper hospital, conceptualised, executed, and completed in nine days, that can run smoothly for five to ten years. It reflects the UAE’s long-term vision and commitment to the welfare of everyone living here,” he noted.

A Safe Second Home for Expats

The hospital will be staffed by over 50 doctors and 150 nurses from more than 25 nationalities, primarily serving patients from industrial areas of Abu Dhabi. Bidhan Chowdhury, CEO of MediQ Healthcare Group, who oversees medical team training, shared that the facility will operate in three shifts daily, with 15–20 doctors per shift.

He stressed that the aim is not just treatment, but also reassurance, ensuring that expatriates feel safe and supported, reinforcing the UAE’s role as a true “second home.”

205 Beds with World-Class Facilities

The hospital is thoughtfully divided into colour-coded zones to streamline patient care:

  • Green Zone: 48 ICU beds for critical patients

  • Blue Zone: 52 beds equipped with oxygen lines

  • Yellow Zone: 105 beds for patients with mild symptoms

Each patient is provided with a private, well-designed space featuring a bed, air conditioning, internet access, TV with wireless headphones, a sofa, a table, a night lamp, and even a dedicated space for prayer. Subtle colours and motivational messages on the walls help maintain a positive, calming environment, crucial for recovery.

Beyond its immediate role in combating Covid-19, the Al Razeen Field Hospital sets a new benchmark for emergency healthcare facilities worldwide. Designed for durability, efficiency, and patient comfort, it proves that rapid construction and world-class care can go hand in hand.
